"applying computer settings" taking 10 minutes

A client has a laptop that she takes home once in a while and when logging on the applying computer settings takes up to 10 minutes. We use SMS and Compaq agents and it was thought that taking it home was causing the slow settings because it was going through everything as she was back on our LAN. The system has been left at work for the last few weeks and the settings is still taking up to 10 minutes. Anything I should check? I was going to uninstall SMS on her system to see if that made a difference to narrow down where the problem is originating.
