does anyone know what this means? I am trying to run a huge queue with sendmail -q -v and it gets through about 1000 meaages and quits with: "Skipping /var/spool/mqueue/i2NIbfHI004544 (sequence 731 of 10303) and flushing rest of queue".

It doesn't seem to be the same message each time.

thanks.

How often is your queue runner set to run ?

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

I have it set to run once an hour in cron, but it doesn't seem to be doing it, or at least doesn't seem to finish. that's why I tried the -v option and sure enough it cuts out well before its done.

Looks like you are sending a lot of mail for just one queue. Have u tried setting up multiple queues ?
I did a set up like this a while ago for an ISP.
What I did was created multiple queues in the file system (on seperate physical disks)
/mailq/q.1
/mailq/q.2
/mailq/q.3
What this did was increase the IOP capacity by a factor of three. Then you need to add the following to your sendmail.mc
define(`QUEUE_DIR',`/mailq/q.*')
Run the sendmail.mc through the m4 preprocessor
m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
Now restart sendmail.
It worked for them

thanks for the tip, however, I am still having trouble clearing out the 3 queues I created. My server is set to try to deliver for 4 days. I have over 5 days worth in my queue. new mail seems to be coming and going within each queue, but I'm not convinced the queue runner is ever going through each one. I've done sendmail -q, but I don't know if thatruns each queue sequentially or 3 seperate runners. This has concerned me enough that I've rebuilt one of my servers from scratch and still have the trouble.

thanks again for any help!

I hate to point out the obvious but is your DNS set up properly ???

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

I think so...another server we have seems fine with the same dns servers...with only one queue. it's a beefier machine, but I don't think processing is the issue because sar shows about 90% idle.

can you post /var/log/maillog & /var/log/messages entries when you run sendmail -q

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

Can you run top from a command line and post that too ??

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

here are a few lines of maillog after doing sendmail -q.
I've replaced my domain with mydomain, my internal server with myInternalServer, and my external server (which is the one in question) with my server. there is nothing in messages that coresponds to this time period, so I ommited it. top (ironically :) ) is at the bottom!

At a quick glance you have a problem with your aliases database. How are you creating the aliases.db file?
(use newaliases or sendmail -bi to do this)
Check the permissions on the aliases.db file too. CD to where the aliases & aliases.db files are (probably /etc/mail) and type chmod 640 aliases.db Now run sendmail -bi to recreate the new aliases.bd file. Who is the owner of this file after you create it ?

The next thing I noticed is:
###stat=Sent (2.6.0 <011101c41b41$5745a78f$7c4e9472@herewegoherewegoherewego.com> Queued mail for delivery###
You mail server sent the message because of the stat=sent in the log file but the REMOTE HOST QUEUED the mail. It looks like the remote host may be listed by an RBL somewhere, maybe not but worth checking anyway.

Connection timed out with gjr.paknet.com.pk

If these are valid domains you shouldn't see these many timeouts as you are getting. That's why I asked if DNS is working ok.
If I were you I'd fix the aliases problem first, then double check my DNS (run dig mail.hotmail.com) and check against these results (query from my server returned below)

Then check your firewall and make sure that traffic from the DMZ in/out is not being filtered or "shaped".

I got the same thing you did for hotmail and I get responses for the others too, so I think DNS is ok. unless I'm missing something...
I see what you meant about aliases, but I am not really using that. this is just a mail gateway that passes everything off to an Exchange environment. the owner and group were smmsp. I changed the permissions of aliases.db to 666, ran the sendmail -bi, which seemed ok, and changed the permissions back to 640. I restarted sendmail...we'll see how that goes.
I shouldn't need to manually schedule sendmail -q for each seperate queue, should I?

thanks for all your help.

another wierd thing that I think is related: I tried to sendmail -q each of the queues manually and they go away after a few minutes. here is my output after a few moments. it still has q1 running:
ps -efww |grep run
root 1647 1 0 Mar26 ? 00:00:00 xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid
smmsp 17329 1 0 16:51 ? 00:00:00 sendmail: Queue runner@01:00:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue
root 21220 17320 0 17:51 ? 00:00:02 sendmail: running queue: /var/spool/mqueue/q1

but I run them manually and I get a bunch of them:
ps -efww |grep run
root 1647 1 0 Mar26 ? 00:00:00 xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid
smmsp 17329 1 0 16:51 ? 00:00:00 sendmail: Queue runner@01:00:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue
root 21842 1 0 18:01 ? 00:00:00 sendmail: running queue: /var/spool/mqueue/q1
root 21845 1 0 18:01 ? 00:00:00 sendmail: running queue: /var/spool/mqueue/q2

root 21972 15992 1 18:02 pts/1 00:00:00 grep run

No the queue runner will do it for you.
Can you post your access file and local-host-names file ?
Beyond this my guess would be a network issue.

Gibby111,
Look in your sendmail.cf for the following
# how many jobs can you process in the queue?
#O MaxQueueRunSize=10000
Try upping the qty to 20000
Then look for
# maximum number of queue-runners per queue-grouping with multiple queues
#O MaxRunnersPerQueue=1
Try changing the MaxRunnersPerQueue to 2
See if you notice any performance improvement. I know it's not generally a good idea to edit the senmail.cf directly but I would in this case. Sorry for my absence but I have been stuck in Cisco frame-relay traffic shaping hell for the past weeks.

Obviously you need to remove the # and restart sendmail.

thanks for the tips...I think I found a work around. I think the reason the proocess kept bailing out was because the load average was hitting the default limit of either 8 or 12. ( not sure which one did it), but I upped the following from the default of 8 and 12 respectively:

# load average at which we just queue messages
O QueueLA=16
#O QueueLA=8

# load average at which we refuse connections
O RefuseLA=20
#O RefuseLA=12

the defaults seem awfully low. my servers arent too taxed, but I guess they do hit those numbers sometimes...who knew! I found the following line in my maillog:
Apr 20 11:24:57 ServerName sendmail[27732]: runqueue: Flushing queue from /var/sp
ool/mqueue/q1/i3KAuPk7012366 (pri 570408, LA 15, 485 of 7936)
The LA is what tipped me off (finally).

anywho, I was able to get through my whole queue last night. I had one problem where I didn't get a message that cron sends me nightly until I restarted sendmail in the morning, but I think that had to do with me tweaking the max children. I put that back to where I found it and will find out tomorrow if everything is ok.

thanks again for the help.
