The other day a FE/BE app that has been running without incident for 9 months on a small Win XP Pro peer-to-peer network began to a) not allow me, from my development/FE computer to link to the BE and b) not allow me to copy the BE mdb file from the computer where it resides to my computer. This is not a true server setup but one where the BE is in a shared folder on the other PC. I believe this is called simple file sharing Win XP nomenclature.
The only unusual thing that I can think of that happened is that I logged onto the BE mdb (I am the owner and administrator) and changed its setting to "Compact on Close". All computers open the db via shortcuts that point to a shared folder on the computer on which the BE resides. Each computer has a copy of Access 2000 installed. If the BE file is copied to a subfolder, I can then link to it from the other computer and copy from the subfolder to my computer over the network.
I have reviewed dozens of threads, as well as many docs including the MS Access Security paper but have found nothing that seems to relate to this.
Thanks for any help that might be forthcoming.
