An "ewer" is a pitcher, not the baseball kind but the kind you serve drinks from. Anyone who does crosswords will know this word.

Crossword puzzles are great for learning new words. I try to solve 3-4 a week.

Crosswords are great for learning three- and four-letter words that you won't see or hear anywhere else but in a crossword puzzle.

They're also great to remember for Scrabble.

An "ewer" is a pitcher...
Following in the tradition of MAI precision writing, I'll assert that the correct reference is "a 'ewer'"; where the pronunciation key says:
M-W.com said:
Pronunciation: 'yü-&r, 'yu-&r
...the initial sound is a consonant, "y", sound, so the article, "a" is appropriate. If the pronunciation of "ewer" were "oo-&r", then "an" would be the appropriate article.

I wrote an ode to a Grecian ewer once... it was my favorite.

I use to have a most boring job where we had nothing to do but crossword puzzles every day. I later realized that I do know words but that was it. I still remember some words like picture of Picasso 'Guernica' and nothing this tells me except "picture of Picasso 'Guernica'"...
Unless you research for those words and spending time to read up more - I don't know if crossword puzzles are all that.

Such a simple Grecian pewter ewer
Set graciously amid the torn-up clutter
For workers on break, emerged the sewer
To find glasses and ewer on a tray near the gutter
The droplets of sweat on the surface seemed
To reflect the refreshment the ewer would bear
Workers looked ‘round for the pitcher’s owner
As they climbed one by one from sewer to air
And the sun glared down and this treasure gleamed
The worker’s gave thanks their anonymous donor

These worn leather hands aged from wrench and air hammer
Grasped gently the handle, so simple and smooth
Passed glasses around with nary a clamor
Exactly enough for each worker to soothe
Now held, the engraving became more apparent
Contrasting the tattoo etched on the pourer
For on one a sweating tiger chased a dragon
The other the visage of some sweating explorer
The cold water filled glasses sparkling transparent
Over silvery lip it ran out of this flagon

The ewer’s duties were done; it was empty at last
The worker’s looked ‘round once again to find
Their patron to thank for this welcome repast
Still none to thank for this present so kind
The ewer was placed with the glasses on tray
And the workers filed back to their labor at once
Down into the hole with hammer and wrench
Pleasantly cooled by their good bunce
This fortuitous ewer that appeared on this day
For not only their thirst had it offered its quench

My favorite crossword word of all time is "etui".

Anyone know that one without looking it up?

Eh? Maybe I know this workd differently. My Mum always has one in her handbag, but I can't find mine just now - and I could do with it. (Now I am REALLY hoping we have the same understanding of this word!)

Someone must send me to Time-Out for all of the different "fill-in-the-blanks" that I came up with following Fee's open-ended references. <giggles>
