Quick System Resources Question. 1

Hey Everybody,
I know there are already a lot of posts about system resources but I am unable to find out the quick answer to my question. When I start my computer I start with about 95% available. Than I connect to the internet through DSL, open my winamp to play some already downloaded MP3's and do some surfing. After about say 20 minutes I will disconnect from the internet close my winamp to where nothing else is open and I will only have about 35% free. Is this normal or should I regain my resources back up after I close everything? Do I have a memory leak? I am running win 98se with 256megs of ram on a P-3 system.

Windows 98 is BAD about having Memory leaks. You can try Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill some of those processes. If that does not work then you will have to reboot. There all programs out there to help get back some of that RAM. Freemem Pro is one of them. Here is a link for some different programs you can get. Some are free others you may have to buy.

How are you measuring resources? If you're using the built in Windows one, it also measures swap file space/usage in it's number, and is basically meaningless. Resources are there to be USED!
Read my FAQ on windows resources in the Win98 forum, which explains a little more about how to track what's really happening, with Memory use, Swapfile size/use, etc.

What you stated is valid. The problem is his system is using up the resorces too quickly which indicates a "leaky" application. There are 2 ways that I know of to fix that. one is reboot and the ohter is a memory manager program. One way to fix the application is to uninstall it then reboot. Then reinstall it. Hmm I sometimes get this with my adsl connection and win98.. Could adsl/dsl be a link or just coincidence?

Thanks for all the great comments and responses. I will load system monitor and keep a better eye on things. I think I'm just going to format and reload everything. It's been awhile and I think I'm do. Thanks again.

if it is only 35% dont worry! start to worry at less than 10% however winamp does have a memory leak!that is it takes memory and does not give it back!! as i said anything above 10% dont worry
