Hi all.... just a quick question...

Is it possible to remove and rebuild the 1st Domain Controller in a domain? I seem to have a niggling doubt that you can (safely) do it without starting from scratch.

I have another DC up and running which I am going to transfer the FSMO roles to. Can I transfer all and then remove the 1st DC?

Any help gratefully received...

Plain and simple: Yes
Make sure you transfer the FSMO roles real carefully (and all 5 of them :)) though.

That's great. The tome of a 2000 Server book I have seems to suggest you cant (or perhaps shouldn't) move the Schema and Domain Naming Master roles from the 1st server... it goes as far as saying start the Domain from scratch should you wish to!

I was a bit worried. However the fact that our 1st DC is getting a little bit knackered has prompted me to take the risk... Do you know anyway of recovering, or changing the Active Directory Recovery Administrator password? The password seems to have been misplaced....

Thanks for your help mate.
