Given the usual set up of a Meridian feature phone when the handset is lifted, if a call is present on key 0 it is presented via the handset, if no call is present then dial tone is returned. Extension users with several keys allocated as extension numbers may require not to receive dial tone when lifting the handset, if a call is present on one of the keys, other than key 0, a preference may be given to present the incoming call, also if key 0 is already busy (if the key is an scr or scn shared with another set and the other set is using the line) dial tone may be presented from one of the other keys. The definition of this service, as stated in the features manual is printed below:
Automatic Line Selection allows manual or automatic selection of incoming
and outgoing lines for a given Meridian 1 proprietary telephone on a Class of
Service basis. When a user lifts the handset, the telephone automatically
selects a preferred line according to its priority.
The CLS (class of service) options are as follows:
IRA or IRD allow or deny, if allowed incoming ringing line preference (this will present any call on a ringing key to the handset)
NIA/NID allow or deny, if allowed incoming non-ringing line preference (this will present any call on a non-ringing key to the handset)
OLA/OLD allow or deny, if allowed outgoing line preference (this will present dial tone, if key 0 is not available the other available keys will be hunted through in order to find a free line). However if either IRA or NIA are also present then any incoming call will be terminated in preference to dial tone.
Once any one of these CLS has been set to allowed the the LPK option becomes available. This specifies the last key on the set to be included in the scanning process.
LPK XX (XX being the last key to be scanned)
Any ringing or non-ringing key or any available line after the key number will not be included in the service, therefore if the setting is left as zero then the feature will be disabled.
