my cisco soho router has 10 mbs on the wan card, 10/100 on the lan side. i have a gigabit switch between that router and the pc's and servers... If i move something from pc1 to pc2 (both attached to the switch) will i be using the gigabit capabilities of the switch or will i be limited by the 10/100 router...

[router] - [switch] - [pc1]
- [pc2]

It all depends on your network setup.

If both your PCs are on the same LAN and are configured at 1G speed, they will use the full speed of their connection.

On the other hand, if they are not on the same network and they need to go through your router to talk to each other, then the transfer will be done at 10/100 speed (which ever your router is configured on)

The lowest common denominator wins. Two 1G and one 100 = 100
two 1G = 1G.

Hope this helps.
