Anyone ever notice that some shortcuts in Quick Launch change on their own, to random icons? The shortcuts still work correctly, but the graphical representation is incorrect.
I have found that downloading and using the microsft utility TweakUI (tweak user interface) the icons seem not to get visualy corrupt as easily. Also it has some great extra little features. You can download it from the microsoft website for free. There are also a few registry tricks for most windows annoyances that can be found here:
Also try right clicking on the desktop, go to properties, then click on Effects, Uncheck or Check the "Show icons using all possible colors" Then apply. Each time you change this setting it makes Windows reset the icons on the desktop and supposedly the quick launch icons. I have verified that it works on the icons on the desktop, have yet had the situation on resetting the quick launch icons, but worth a try.
