OK, I know this is the Exchange 5.5 forum, but you can't imagine how hard it's been trying to even find anything on Exchange 4.0. I figured 5.5 was close enough in how you do things to be able to figure out what to do.
Anyway, onto my problem. I'm what you would call a self taught MIS Admin. I moved up in my company to Estimator in '97 and just kinda took over the job of MIS Administrator along with Quality Manager because the person that was doing it was no longer with the company. Our server was purchased in late '96. It's a HP LHPRO 200Mhz with mirrored 4gig hdd with WinNT server 4.0. There isn't an option to buy a new server and software at the moment because of financial reasons. I know alot about computers and have managed to keep things running fine. The problem is that the priv.edb file has never been defraged. And now is to an unmanagable point. Since adding the internet to everyone, the email has grown alot. The file has grown to 1.5gig and is too large to even defrag on the server and read that I have to map a drive. I have managed to find a "Exchange Server 4.0 Survival Guide" on a filesharing program after weeks of searching for info. I just came across this site recently(thank goodness). So I have many questions. First, to run edbutil.exe do you need to be in true DOS or just the command prompt in windows? Second, everytime I try to backup the file. It says it's in use. I've disconnected the server from the network and also shut down Exchange server as I read. But I still get this error. I'm ready to just tell everyone to back up the email they need and defrag with out backing up the file. I know I should have a backup incase of problems. Any help is very much appreciated and if anyone needs a copy of the Survival guide, just contact me. Not sure if you can put URls here but I can add it in a zip file to a site.

What version of windows do you use on the server?
In exchange 5.5 you use eseutil but as I remember the name of this util was different on 4.0

We have Windows NT Server 4.0 running on the server and the utility is edbutil.exe for Exchange 4.0

What I would try to do is:

Clean up as much as you can in the mailboxes and make sure that exchange have cleaned the messages out of the database.

Check how big your priv.edb and how much space you have left. What you need is basicly the current size of priv.edb and the size of the new priv.edb.

take a backup.

Stop exchange services

compress the directories (all the complete drive) using the normal NTFS compress (with a little luck the database will compress 1:1,5)

Run edbutil to defrag the database

Uncompress the directories

Start the services.

If it works it's great, if not recover.

I don't know when the exchange optimizer came out but on 5.5 you could use it to move the exchange databases around on different volumes.

but do you have to run the utility from a true Dos or can you run from a dos prompt in widows?

It should be in the cmd.exe box
It's not a Dos box but it looks the same

How much space do you have left on the volume with your 1,5 gb priv.edb?

hehehe, only 401Mb.. That's another part of my problem. I'll end up having to map a drive to do what I have to do when I figure out how to do it.

Remember that if you only have 400 MB of data inside your priv.edb your will not need 1,5 GB times 2 but 1,5 GB + 400 MB

Do you have the Exchange Optimizer or was that only shipped with later versions of exchange.
It can move the databases from on disk to another.

If you can ad a new disk you could move the database to the new drive. Is installing an extra drive an option?

I don't believe that the optimizer was with this older version. And the option of adding extra drives is doubtful as trying to find these old swap drives has been impossible so far.

Well I still haven't figured out how to stop the service.. there is no service control panel that I can just stop this from. I'm at ends trying to figure out how to stop it so that I can get a back-up before I go anywhere. Any ideas???
