Questions about SBS 2003 Premium

Question 1:

If I create a SBS 2003 P domain, may I add another Windows 2003 server to the domain as a device? I'm trying to add a Datawarehouse server as a device to a sbs2003 Premium Domain.

Question 2:

What about a standalone 2003 web server? Could that webserver transfer information to and from the SBS 2003 Domain server? If I created a stand alone 2003 server and placed it into a DMZ, put apache on it, would it be possible to have that machine transfer data from a machine in the internal network?

I realize this last question might sound obvious, but I am trying to get a technical answer versus a functional answer as I was told its possible. I have some reservations, so I am asking this question.


I have not yet built the sbs2003 domain, as I am awaiting the hardware specs for this project.

Yes, you will be able to have another Windows 2003 server in the domain. You will not be able to have it as a DC, but as a member server.

On to question 2:

I want to get this straight....You want to transfer data from your internal network to the web server in the DMZ, right? If so, it can be done. You'll need to have some policies in place though (firewall policies). What I mean is that you'll need to configure the firewall ACL's to allow the type of communication you are looking for, only from the IP's/MAC's you want.

Actually, there is no restriction on having additional Domain Controllers in an SBS domain. However your SBS Server needs to hold the FSMO's.

Personally, I would recommend having an additional DC.

With SBS Premium, you've got ISA server. When you mention using a DMZ, are you talking about a physical DMZ on a frontend firewall device, or using ISA to create the DMZ?

If its the former, a physical firewall, depending on the model, be aware you may not get much protection for your webserver and it could get slammed hard.

With an appropriate frontend firewall, using the DMZ there is OK, but if you're authenticating from your webserver through ISA into resources internally, it might be better to place the webserver behind ISA server. ISA'04 is pretty good not just as a firewall/proxy, but also as an app filter.

None - you will not need additionally licenses.

A. Your Windows Small Business Server 2003 CALs cover you for any additional Windows-based servers in the domain. You do not need to buy additional CALs for them.
