I am in the process of migrating from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003.

I have pretty much followed the following link:

A couple of questions...

What about the public folder IPM_SubTree? Does that need to be rehomed (synched to new server and remove the source)?

I have a few mailboxes that I am just going to delete (I guess I don't really have to, I could just not move them). If the account assocaited with it is disabled, the only choice I have is to purge it, otherwise I can delete the mailbox. In either case, the mailbox stil shows up in System Manager. Why is that?

I am not sure I understand what you mean by:

"You have to move them or you'll get errors when you run through"

Move all the mailboxes or the public folders?

If you meant the mailboxes, why would I have to move ones I don't need (ones associated with old user accounts)? Also the article states not to move the SystemMailbox, System Attendant and SMTP mailboxes.

Did you mean rehoming the IPM_Subtree public folder?

What errors could I get and when would I get them? When I turn the old server off or when I try to uninstall the old exchange server?

You have to move them or delete them. You can't uninstall Exchange if mailboxes still exist on the server. And, you can't just turn off the old server until you've gone through each step in the kb that I listed.

already went thru that list

that article leaves a few things out

by the way...I was able to purge the mailbox for deleting the mailbox in Active Directory Users and Computers, running the mailbox cleanup wizard and then purging it.

Well...looking at the link you sent again and since I have now moved every mailbox except SMTP, System Attendent and the systemmailbox, the only questions I have are about the public folders.

I already rehomed all the public folders we have manually created.

What about the IPM_Subtree folder?

What about the offline address book starting with EX:/organization_name...?

What about the system configuration system folder?

If you've followed that KB exactly, that's all you need. Some folders that exist on the source server will appear on the destination server eventually.
