My Exchange server is currently running on a stand alond win 2000 server in an NT domain. My win NT domain controller needs to be replaced and I have a Win NT backup domain controller in the network also. I want to know if I can do an upgrade to the backup domain controller to Win 2000 server and convert everything to Active Directory and if it will keep all the permissions and profiles from the original domain? Also, will my 5.5 Exchange server still work under Active Directory? Should I do a clean install of Win 2000 on a different server and join all the servers and clients to it - and how will this affect the Exchange server?

I appreciate any information in this matter.

the first server configured under ADS is considered by ADS as the PDC. So, if you were to configured your current BDC as a PDC, I would imagine plenty of problem you would be in store for.
i just went through this crap. First, promote your BDC to a PDC. Upgrade this machine to win/2000 with ADS installed.
Replace your old domain controller withe the new system. Install win/2000 with ADS configured and now its a BDC in your new win/2000 domain.
On the current PDC (which was your old BDC) run from a command prompt c:\dcpromo and remove it from the domain. this will make your newly installed server the PDC. Reinstall ADS on the using the dcpromo command and it will be configured as a BDC.

this might help:

And of course there is software to take of all of this for a few bucks. Look at for example.

And yes, Exchange 5.5 does work under ADS. I installed win2000 server on top of NT4 with Exchange Server already installed. No problems...............

Good Luck...........
