How can I remove the network password on the windows 2000 machine shares?
I never established a network password of any sort on either of the 2 windows 2000 machines, yet it asks for one.
Does anyone have any idea why?
Thanks

I really don't know how to help you but maybe you can help me. I have just recently purchased a cable router but I don't know how to network my home computer win me with my laptop win 2000. Can you help.

Is it asking for a username password or a IPC$ password?

Odinfire,

To access shares on a 2k machine in workgroup without password, you need account(s) set up on 2k machine which machine the network logon credentials used to logon to other machines (ie, user name & password). Or enable the guest account - but that's known security risk if connected to internet.

If the machine trying to do the access is win9x/ME, you HAVE to have such an account, as otherwise you just get a password prompt that you can't supply correct value to.

If accessing machines are NT/2k/XP you get a username/password prompt - and supplying values for these which identify a user set up on 2k machine will get you access.

Note. XP Pro machines have something called simplified sharing enabled by default (folder options, view tab). If you disable this, they also will act like the 2k machines regarding shares.

Indeed wolluf.
Just after I got done with posting this thread I was finally able to find something on MS's knowledge base. You are dead on with your suggestion. I tried that and it worked fine. Thanks again!
