One of my heat sink clips broke so the sink is half on, half off. So I kept my computer on for a fair amount of time and checked performance and it was working properly. But I can not remember what the average idle process is for my computer (XP Home). Would any one know what it is? Thanks

With a really idle system, idle process take up approximately 99% of CPU time.

I think you're inviting trouble by using the system with a half connected heatsink. Depending on the contact you're getting currently, it may be even worse than no heatsink at all, because half of the chip may be overheating while the other half is cool. mechanically uneven expansion due to heat may be deadly.

Good luck,

i would never even power on a system with out proper cooling in place. and secondly system idle process wont tell you a thing about whats overheating or not. you realy should fix it before you do anything else. they are so easy to blow. i did one in about 5 seconds literaly. and that was half on like you say yours is. its not worth the risk for the small cost of a fan.

I just replaced a cpu. I looked inside the case and just shook my head because although the fan worked it was half off. The cpu had a burn mark on it and nobody in the house would fess up to doing it. I'm surprised it doesn't shut it self down so it doesn't overheat?
BEWARE!
