I'm starting to set up win 2k boxes on our network. I want to set everyone where they can't install programs but I'm afraid when I get to the engineering group that might be a problem. How do you all set up these people, power user, restricted user??? They use mechanical deskop and autocad 2000 full version. Will these programs run with the securities set up where they can't install programs?

Thanks for the suggestions or advise! [auto]

Our network is Win2000 and XP pro and we use active directory. On the guys in drafting that use Autocad I have made a group called Drafting and added drafting to the local machines as a power user. Making them a power user is the only way I have found to get around the Reg error that occours in Autocad on startup if you make them just a user. One of these days I plan to play with security templets and maybe I can get a custom one to work where I wont have to make the users local power useres.

Shender944,

So really there is no way of locking the desktops and notebooks down when they run autocad? I want to have everyone as users so they won't install junk, you know. Just before I saw your message I found out that we had to make them a power user which deteats the purpose of security.

I have to lock these new pc's down. Anyone with a solution?

OK since I need to figure this out too, what if we go with a group policy? And lock down some of the controls that way. Cause you can lock down the desk top and disable the drives or go as far as to prevent them from broswing ect.... But the A cad will still be able to access the registery for the changes it makes at startup.
