Hi All,
I am trying to resolve some memory issues for some workstations in my company and using Process Explorer(tool from SysInternals). I am trying to understand some of the numbers that the tool uses:
1) Physical Usage - this is a number which is shown in the the status bar(bottom of the screen). If it is not shown by default, you can right click on the status bar and choose the parameter from the pop-up(Status bar tab options).

For example: Total RAM in a workstation : 4GB
Available for usage : 3GB
Used RAM : 1.5GB(Working set from Process Explorer)
Physical Usage(according to me): (1.5/3)*100 = 50%

However, in reality, the Physical Usage shows a much higher number than calculated above. May be I am misinterpreting the terms. If so, then some explanations would be wonderful.

Thanks

R

I don't have an XP machine to test on at the moment, but I see consistent results everywhere in process explorer & task manager. Are you using the most recent version of procexp? Where in procexp are you seeing this 'used ram' value?

it does not say "used ram" It says "Physical Usage" on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. I am assuming "Physical Usage" means "Physical Memory Usage".

Yes I am using the latest version of procexp.

Thanks for your help.

The Physical Usage number appears to be related to the Physical Memory area found in the System Information panel from within Process Explorer (Ctrl-I), i.e.

(Total - Available) * 100 / Available

And as Smah mentioned, almost the same values can be found in Task Manager, Performance tab, Physical Memory section.

This was a quick check on one machine. Hopefully this helps.
