Hello -

I take the 640-821 test on Monday.

The test has a high passing score - Intro is 825 vs 849 for ICND and 849 for the 640-801 composite test. I've also read you get 300 points for just showing up. Does that mean you need only 52.5% and 54.9% of the points to pass? Or maybe just 75% of points to pass (525/700)? Or is it 82.5%?

I've studied pretty hard. I have read the Sybex chapters, the Que books, Transcenders and so on and I do feel I got
a good shot at passing.

Hell, if I got 300points just for showing up, I'd have passed the CCNA myself. I never heard about that, or getting points for just showing up. I doubt it in my opinion.

chicagocubfan,

Yes it is true you get 300 points for showing up and starting the test - but what does it matter?

Are you going to change how you study if it is 52% or 75% or 82% ??????????

As far as anyone knows Cisco might give you 500 points for the 5th question, 40 for the 22nd question and 160 for the rest :) :) It really just does not matter!

The bottom line is that passing is 849 NO MATTER HOW CISCO COMES UP WITH THAT NUMBER!!!

You need to learn all the objectives posted so that you can pass the CCNA exam and be a GREAT CCNA!!!!

Please continue with what you were all doing :)

1 thing that is important to remember is that not all questions are weighted the same. It's possible to get a few questions wrong and bomb the exam.

Thanks. I knew you got 300 points for just "showing up."

I was getting nervous for the upcoming test and wanted to get an idea what percentage of points I needed to get right to pass.

I will keep studying up until then, and focus on doing the best I can do rather than how the scored is tabulated.

I guess I was wrong for doubting it. But like CiscoGuy said, you shouldn't change the way you study, or study any less. It's always important to have a grasp of what a REAL CCNA is all about.

My bad for doubting....

Peace

CiscoRC,

NO BIG DEAL !!

Like I said it really does not matter they could give you 1,000,000,000,300 and you need 1,000,000,000,849 to pass :) :)

It is just a number - idea is - you want to PASS!

I know someone that got 848 on it :-(

I also know someone that got EXACTLY the passing score on one of her MCSE exams - she was bummed out until I told her that NO ONE CARES WHAT YOUR SCORE WAS - YOU PASSED!!!!

CiscoGuy33,

Wow, a 848? Just 1 point away? That has got to be shocked, I know I would.

Mr. Broda, you need to swing by my place for some hard core Cisco Study!! lol

I felt that some where inside that the score didn't matter because you passed, just as you explained. I think I worry too much about the numbers. It's a real bad habit. My boss knows this when I was being interviewed, or should I say, yearly interview. I was looking at the numbers more then what the person was saying on the Review. It's a childhood thing. I'm getting past that.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Peace

CiscoRC, I am 36 years old, and I STILL have that habit. It can be a good thing and work in your favor---being concerned with what you get, then you will naturally shoot for the highest number. If someone is only concerned with what it takes to simply pass (NOT saying anyone in this thread is like that---in fact, seems quite the contrary)---that person will only shoot for 849, meaning 849 to that person is perfection. Nobody is perfect, which makes this a recipe for almost certain failure.

Absolutely, Burt, it's still that habit, I'm 37 myself, old fart I know..lol..anyway, I have a slight poor discipline to myself since failed it twice. I will get upbeat again, just going to focus as soon as I get my cisci press books. I ordered new sets. Although, I bought a CCNA Portable command line, you may think it's useless but for me to see those commands, why, how it is used..make sense? This will get me to see and understand it. It's why I come on here a lot because everyone is sharing commands and how to set up Routers, Switches, Pix, and what not....I just learn differently....your statement makes sense...thanks for the heads up.

Peace

I got an 847 last week! And the first time I tried to take it over a year ago I got an 837. Either way that is 1 question, because the average question is worth between 13-14 points including the ones that don't count at all...math for this is below:

test score range:
300-1000

that is a total of 700 available points. There were 53 questons on each of the tests I took.

700/53 = 13.207 etc.

I took it today and got an 821 (missed by 28 points) so that is 2-3 questions.

Anyway, wanted to share my CCNA 'agony of defeat' with you all. I WILL pass next time...or maybe the time after that...or...

There is a quote from My Cousin Vinny that comes to mind:

"But Vin, you graduated from law school like 6 years ago. What have you been doing since then?!"

"Studying...for the bar."

"That's a lot of studying.
