Question about Avaya Partner Systems... RJ45 instead of RJ11?

Hi there-

I just had a quick question... I've always known the Avaya Partner phones (all of ours at least) have a RJ45 port on the back of them- the type that you use to connect your computer to your wired network. Why is there these ports on the back? Why not just a RJ11 typical phone port?

All our phones were initially setup (by a guy who isn't with us anymore) through RJ11 ports. CAT3 cables ran from the phone to wall jack, to the Avaya Partner system with all RJ11 jacks/connectors.

Our phones are working fine... and always have been. Just are we missing out on some features by not using the RJ45 by not using all of the 8 wires, and only using 4? Are these ports just for SIP Trunks (a company quoted us for a few and said the ACS R8 system supported it) or something?

Hmmmm.....

The Partner system indirectly evolved from an old system (Merlin) that required all 4 pairs to work. AT&T kept it rj 45 to make an easier transition from old to new. When these system 1st came out, only AT&T technichians were putting them in.

Partner systems do not support SIP trunking. For that you would need at least an IP Office.

I wouldn't say I "hate" my job...it's just that most days, I'd rather get kicked in the nuts repeatedly instead of being here.

There is an IP Office Partner Edition. It can do SIP trunking.
What does the phone system look like?

1043- Google IP Office 500 for pics, I've installed certain partner phones where the basecord was one end rj 11 and the other rj 45. Btw no you aren't losing any features with it being rj 11 as it's just cabling and they work the same just different sizes.

I know what they look like. Its either an old ACS, or the IP 500 Partner Edition. He's comparing oranges with grapefruit.

That cable you are talking is only supplied with digital Ip Office phones not the ETR phones. I think they are 2 pair cables using pairs 4,5 and 7,8 on the rj45 side ( which means it is only using pairs 4,5) and not 2 pair using 4,5 and 3,6 which the ETR phone requires.

Yeah they did that's what I was referring too, I had to install a few of them awhile back and I remember having to use different basecords cause my voice jacks were rj 11 and the phones were shipped with those rj 45 to rj 11 cords.
