Query for IE should be easy?

SMS is a great program. We have been able to deploy a custom version of IE6 we built with IEAK. Now I'd like to verify all machines have completed the install, and not depend on what the system status messages tell me. Queries are what one would think you would use, but to date, I haven't found anywhere one can query for a version of IE or any hotfixes also deployed and installed. This would be a great benefit to query and deploy for such items, especially for a campus with 35+ buildings, and only 1 Network Administrator. Someone's done this before so I'd hate to re-invent the wheel. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Add files with .exe extensions to your software inventory file types then (after a few days - depending on your sites software inventory frequency) you can then build a query on the version of the file iexplore.exe. Hope this helps...
