I'm designing my first Access 97 database and my customer needs to be able to retrieve item(s) that have a particular date entered. This data can be in any one of 4 tables I have established. For example, he needs to be able to find out what brief was presented to someone on 9/13/98. He is unfamiliar with Access and I'm trying to make this as user friendly as possible so he only has to enter the applicable date and Access will give him the information he needs.

Could you give us some more detail? What are the four tables? Are they related in any way? Is the user going to know, in some manner, which table should be searched?

My first thought would be a form with a frame and four option buttons to allow the user to check the table that should be searched. The form would also have a text box which would be used to enter the date. Finally, the form would have a command button to retrieve the records. Behind the command button, you would write code to create a query "on the fly" and run the query and present the data in whatever form you wish.

Does this sound like what you are looking for? None of this is particularly difficult, with a bit of help.

Kathryn

My four tables are not related to each other but they have many common fields between them. I set up indiv tables due to tracking/data entry differences between them and I did not want to set up one large table. Each of these four tables IS related to a location table that has been established though. It does sound as though what you've suggested might work. I'm also going to try setting up a parameter query that will prompt him for criteria each time it's run.

In your query first decide what table the date is coming from.
Then simply you can create prompt to ask any dates you want.

By adding
[Enter the date in mm/dd/yyyy format]
To the criteria.

If you need any more info or an example let me know.
Good Luck. <img src=
