Ok...check this...I can open Query analyzer(QA) and connect to any of our SQL servers just fine. I can do EVERYTHING/ANYTHING i need/want to do.
HOWEVER...if i'm idle for too long or if i minimize QA and then bring it back up and attempt to expand a database object,(SP,view, usertables etc.etc )i get a box that says....
"[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Communication Link Failure]
Would you like to reconnect?"
I click yes and it works fine again until i'm either idle for too long or i minimize it...

I'm thinking possible service thats not running or something....any help or pointers will be very appreciated...

Open Enterprise Manager, expand until you see your database, right click on the database, select properties, go to Options tab....is AutoClose checked? If so, uncheck it.

If not, right click on the SQL Server instance, select Properties, go to Connections. What is the Query Time-Out set for?

The AUTO-CLOSE is not checked on any of the DB's. (This is happening all of the servers/databases i connect to from query analyzer)...This is why i believe it is caused from client specific setting/service. it also only happens with QA...EM appears to be fine...

Also i forgot to mention that this just started happening...within the past week.

Install SP4 on the workstation with the problem. Some file probably got updated by something.

The machine is running XP professional. I cant seem to find a SP4...

I believe he means SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

What service pack do you have on your SQL Server?

Code:
SELECT ServerProperty('Edition'),
       ServerProperty('ProductLevel'),
       ServerProperty('ProductVersion')

Enterprise Edition SP4 8.00.2039

again, i do not believe the issus is server specific seeing that;

1. It happens on all of our servers (5)
2. This just started happening
3. My Other computer does not have this issue.

The PC that this is happening to is not on the domain, its just on the network. My 2nd computer is on the domain and works fine. The fact that it worked without incident just a week ago makes me think that posslble a service or setting was changed by accident.

Try something.

Start a ping from the machine with the problem to any machine on the domain and leave the ping running in the background. Does the problem go away?

Has the lease timeout on your DHCP server been changed?

I recommended reinstalled SQL SP4 on the workstation not on the server.

Still continues to lose connection after being idle, even while pinging a server on the Domain.

There has been no changes to the DHCP server settings.

Can you provide a link to the SQL SP4?

Time to check the server and the network.

Do the server's Windows Event Logs show any problems?

Check with the network admin, have there been any network bandwidth problems? Or any other network problems?

On your computer, is it assigned a static IP address or DHCP assigned? Is it 'losing it's lease' on the address and the network dropping the connection?

If you have promptSQL on this machine check your connection properties as thier is an idle session timeout.
