i have few update queries that run after a cmd button is clicked. at first everything seemed fine but now..
it's taking too long to load.

after the queries run, msgbox "completed" shows up.
at first it was instanuous and now.. it takes about 15-20secs to pop up.

is there anything i can do to shorten that time?
(im guessing it's because it's running more records as time progresses and people add more records)

Are you running a query from the same data source that people are updating...at the same time? That'll slow it down specially if the table has an indexed field.

Plus are you compacting on a regular basis?

by compacting do you mean like archiving?

Compacting: Tools, Database Utilities, Compact and Repair database (or just compact database on 97 and before).

Access databases become fragmented like hard drives. Compacting the database reorginizes the data so that is contiguous.

Archiving would help (compact afterwords) but is likely not the underlying cause. Using criterai on calculated fields slows things down. Indexing the criteria fields may help. There a lot of other things that can slow a query down, but this thread has now covered the basics.

If you are still having trouble, posting your SQL will help everyone take a critical look at what should be done or if you are just stuck.
