Hi,

We need to produce manuals in 11 different languages - currently using PageMaker (and getting external translators to translate) - we are thinking of changing to a different software and was wondering why Quark Passport would be better for us??? As far as I can see the current process of PM is a pain but can't see any other good alternatives (there has to be a clear advantage of changing packages - cost not really an issue, just need to improve on current process.)

Anybody??? Thanks in advance.

I assume by the vast array of responses received - that Quark is just not that good.

InDesign it is then!

I think it was more like shock that you are using PageMaker.

Quark is, for all its failings, the industry standard page make up application. Make of that what you will.

InDesign is probably technically and economically the better package, but Quark has the userbase.

To be frank, I've used Quark for around 13 years and I've never really felt so let down by it's lack of ability that I have needed to use another application. I dabbled with InDesign once, it was very good but very sluggish on my machine at the time so I've not been back to it.

Though I prefer to use PDF files for repro I come across a great many printers/repro houses that still prefer to recieve a Quark document and all the associated files.

I don't do any multi-language work so I can't comment on that aspect.

Our company just recently started using OS X (Feb15th). At that time we started using both Quark 6 and InDesign CS. While I am more familar with Quark (user since 1994), InDesign has quickly become my application of choice.

As a company we will use Quark when a project is a pick up from an older job. But for new projects we mainly use InDesign.

If I was you I would buy InDesign. As a former PageMaker user you will understand InDesign easily.

InDesign comes with a Pagemaker plugin which will convert all of your old Pagemaker files.

The conversion is good, except, for stuff like Pagemaker's crappy thin thick rule thing and the spacing tight, loose etc. Because InDesign and others layout programs work off numbers. Other than that, it's better.

Well I'm very late to respond to this but for anyone who is interested, Quark's Passport version is great for working in various languages for its ability to regonise things like H & Js in languages other than English and you will not encounter text reflow problems. I think for most users these problems never come up but if you are in a multi-language environment, it becomes rather important.
