Can anyone help I have an epson 2100, which will not print from Quark 5 or 4, it used to but has recently stopped - it will print the text but the picture comes out black and liney. from all other programs it is fine but converting Qxd into illustrator files is a real pain

Okay, here is a list of things to check/test. Just remember I'm throwing out everything, so some will be 'no duhs'.

Are the images sized properly. 100% of box size.

Use Utilities>Usage to see if the image needs to be updated.

Re-import the image with File>Get Picture.

Match the Printer and the Printer Description. File> Print> Setup> Printer Description

Also check the Output>Print Colors. Should use Composite CMYK or RGB.

While there, check under Options tab. Pictures>Output should be normal. Pictures>Data should be ASCII unless you know for a Fact that the other two can be understood by your printer.

Try turning Off/On OPI and Profiles.

Check your printer's options in relation to ICM color correction, Postscript level, as well as any other options related to color handling.

I'm running out of things to check, so I hope one of these works. Good Luck and let me know how it goes.
