Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could guide me on which laser printer would work well with Quark 4, in order for me to print directly on to an A4 sheet. At the moment, I have to print from a PDF but hoping that there is a laser printer which supports direct printing from Quark.

I have a budget of around £500 for a black/white printer.

Is the Brother HL5070N any good for this??

Thanks.

Before buying, make sure it is a true postscript print.

Also check to see if the printer support Postscript Level 2 or 3. Level 3 is still relatively new. I never used Brother printers so I cannot comment on them.

I would check out HP laser printers. There are pretty solid performers. I think they now offer a few inexpensive models.

Hi
Check out Minolta QMS printers. I've had a QMS 860 mono A4/A3 laser printer ( pre Minolta ) for 9 years and it's still going strong. I also have a QMS 1660 ( 7 years ) and this too is great. Both machines have been used 90% of the time with Quark 4 and I can't fault them.

I can only say I have had massive problems with QMS/Minolta printers and have found their support to be terrible.
This is not just my experience but the experience of a huge number of people I have been in contact with.. in fact yours is the first good experience of QMS/Minolta machines I have ever heard.
Parts fail, require replacing and none are available for months. In a 12 month period a brand new £5000 colour laser printer was operational for less than 6 months.
QMS refused to replace the machine (which was in warranty) instead electing to repair it. Over time, when nothing was resolved I managed (with much heartache and what must have been 20-30 phone calls and offers to collect the machine myself) to get them to send me a loan machine of a much lower spec. Apparently this was the only machine they had in the entire country (that is what they told me.. utter nonsense. They didn't even have one in their demo suite?!)
When this machine arrived, it had been shipped with the toner cartridges in place and packed so badly it was trashed. I have photographs of it somewhere that I took as evidence.
The situation was so bad that suppliers I have spoken to, who enthusiastically installed QMS equipment would no longer touch them. They were a whole heap of trouble.

In the end the QMS machine got dumped and was replaced with a Canon 1130 and Fiery NX400 RIP (different price range/ball game I know). I was so happy with that machine and the excellent service I recieved that I have just installed another Canon system at my current workplace.

This is based on my experience within the last 3-4 years.

Well, this is the beauty of these forums ! So many different views and experiences. Maybe things changed when Minolta took over - my machines were pre-Minolta. I also have a QMS Magicolour 6100 which is Minolta machine. It's okay but with colour there are so many things that can go pear shaped and I've experienced some of them. I must say, in general I rate Canon stuff so I would certainly look at their printers if I was in the market for new equipment.
Good luck Baddham.
