I have been working now with both programs for 2 months now, and to be honest, I do not like Quark at all!! All the great MILLIONS of keyboard short cuts you can use with Adobe, you can't use with Quark! Plus, Quark only has like 5 shortcuts (yes, I am exaggerating, but not by much)!! Quark is supposed to be coming out with a newer, better improved versio, I guess we will just have to wait and see if it can compare to Indesign!

Yeah but to even things up a bit.

You try making a one key shortcut in InDesign for applying paragraph styles

Unlike Quark's easy use of the "F" keys, InDesign makes you take your hand off the mouse to apply a two key combo which suck monkey vomit

Marcus

Marcus: That makes no sense to most of us.

We're in the US, Canada, and Europe for the most part. There are no monkeys in these areas. Therefore we have no experience with sucking monkey vomit.

I'm know you Aussies can hop a short flight to many parts of southeast Asia where there are many monkeys, and monkey vomit to suck. But, Marcus, we can't.

In the future I suggest that you use terms we can all relate to; possibly somehting like sucking horse vomit, or eating birds' feet

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Good to know...I'll keep that in mind.

As you said, the Monkeys are hard to find over here unless you know a guy, who knows a guy.

It's no bad...a bit chunky, hard to suck though the teeth.

How about Kangaroo vomit? I just read that there are 10 times as many kangaroos as people on that island of yours. So you probably trip over kangaroo vomit on a daily basis.

No...but I'm trying to get rid of one which keeps doing number two's all over my back lawn. I chased him with a shovel the other night, but he just stood up and looked like he was going to box me up so I ran away, He stood about 7 foot tall.

Marcus

How cool! All we get are raccoons and squirrels.

How can you perpetuate such silly notions - they believe you, you know.

Kangaroos may be numerous - personally I've never heard they are '10 times as many kangaroos as people on that island of yours' - and I very much doubt this is the case. People seem to think they run around our gardens - they don't. You usually have to go out to the uninhabited countryside to see a kangaroo, or at least the zoo.

Why not leave your hand on the mouse and just click the paragraph styles palette?

Eggles,

Although I like to tell people we ride them down the main street like horses, (which is a lie) they are still everywhere.

You live in Melbourne not Central Victoria, where I live, we have hundreds of the buggers, they are a real problem, people hit them all the time in cars.

I'll post a photo tomorrow and show you.

That's the way I'm doing it now, but it takes to long to look for them, then click on them. If I can simply hit F1 with my left hand then I don't have to scroll up and down the Para Style pallet look for a style that I apply alot.

It's okay for you, your coming from PageMaker not Quark...(although you've probably used Quark.)

Marcus

>>then I don't have to scroll up and down the Para Style pallet look for a style that I apply alot.<<

(Dunno how to apply the fancy quote thingy on this forum)

I assume you have the Para Styles palette 'stashed' over on the side? (also assuming you use CS2). If you are doing the formatting of your doc, then leaving the palette open over there allows you to see a very long list all at once, so no scrolling, and it's a simple matter of clicking.

Re the kangaroos - yes I know you are in the country, but you still don't see kangaroos strolling (jumping?) down the main street do you?

And yes, ex-Pagemaker user (I never liked Quark).

Yeah, that's how I operate at the moment, but I still wish I could line up most of my style along the F-keys like in Quark.
eg.
F1=Heading A
F2=Heading B
F3=Heading C
F4=Heading D
F5=FirstParaFullOut
This way I click and hit the F-Keys quicker then you can move the mouse from Para to Style to para to style.

The two button shortcut setup in InDesign will only ever be used by left handed mouse users.

At the moment it's not much of a shortcut if it takes longer to do

Marcus

Ok, Here is the Photo I promised.
There are about 20 of these buggers sitting at the bottom of my street every morning, sometime I have dodge them so I don't run them over.

I'm impressed. Is this typical for Maryborough? Are they aggressive? (Shows how much of a townie I am doesn't it?)

Wow, cool picture. That would be the size of a typical NY city rat. :eek:)

Aw, the picture isn't loading... I wanna see kangaroos! (FYI, Photobucket.com is a great free photo hosting site!)
