I just upgraded to Quark 6. Whenever I use the Export to PDF command, my file size is huge (13 MB). Does anyone know how to cut the file size without sacrificing resolution? Even when I downsample to 72 dpi, my file size is still 3-4 MB and my graphics look awful. The same files were about 1.5 MB using old Quark.

If you have Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0, you can use the "Reduce File Size" function (under the File menu). I haven't seen any loss of quality, and it reduces the file sizes quite dramatically.

alternatively u can make a post script file and drag and drop on the distiller it really helps

I had the same problem with large file size. After exhausting my Acrobat options, I saved the Quark document as v5, then opened that version (I still have it installed) and exported the PDF that way. It worked perfectly -- just like it used to.

I am having a real problem making adequate "lo res" pdf files from quark 6 and although I have about 4 different methods, none of them are what I got from quark 5, using OS 9. Depending on the method I use (export to pdf, save as pdf, save as ps, or save file as pdf) the files are either too large, bad quality, too many steps, takes too long, paper size does not match up...the list goes on. When I was on my old G4 with OS9.2 I was able to use the Adobe PS print driver and I made great "ebook" lo res(but not crappy lo res), small files. It worked great for printing proofs quickly. Since Adobe PS doesn't offer support for OSX (look on Adobe website under Support Knowledge Document 326968) we all have to find a different way to make a pdf...which works, but not as well as how it did before.

I've been trying to research this when I have the time to see if anyone else has a better solution but nothing so far. I'm not an expert at all but I feel as though I've tried everything. Very frustrating.

FYI, I went to a seminar last week that had a rep from Quark and he said that in the update (coming out soon), they are correcting the huge pdf file size problem. He said the problem has to do with the way JAWS produces the pdf and they are working on it :)

Yay for an actual answer from a Quark person!
