Quark 6 not saving files

I'm using Quark6 in Panther. I have to save my files back to Quark5 for other users. After going along fine, making changes and saving, etc. I will save a file (which acts like a save as since I'm saving back to 5), locate the place on the server, click on yes I want to replace, it appears to save, even the modification date on the file updates. But if I close out of that file and open it back up again, my changes aren't there. I've even done a Save As, given it a new name, the new name appeared in the file list -- without my changes. This seems to be happening at the same time my Quark "holds on to" files, where even after I am out of them other users can't open the file or I can't trash it (getting a message saying it's locked or busy). Once I restart Quark it works OK for a while. Thing is, without going back a re-looking at every file I save, I have no way of knowing if my corrections are being saved.

You have not described if this problem occurs when you save to the local hard drive. What happens there? It is probable that Quark is not handling your network well. What kind of network is it?

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

I've never had it happen saving to my hard drive, but I don't do that often. We have a newish Windows NT server, ethernet, switches, etc.

We have the same issue! And it is driving me NUTS!!! We run Quark 6.1 on WinXP PCs with Novell Network. A file is opened/created/edited then saved and closed. No one else can open that file, including the person who created it (unless the creator uses the 'Recently Used Files'). It doesn't matter if it is saved, saved as, saved down to 5, etc. it is still unaccessible to others, any edits made prior to a 'save as' disappear and it won't allow an 'overwrite file' either. The damn file just remains locked. I haven't verified this, but one worker stated that saving to the local drive didn't help either.

The only way the file can be accessed is if the person who last accessed the file reboots the PC. Thus giving the impression that the network software is the problem. I did some research and discovered that a similar error happened in Quark 4.04 (Knowledgebase #3970). I am hoping our IT department will be able to solve the issue by looking into the Novell NetWare issue.

Let me know if anyone else solve the problem.

Thanks- for the 'local drive tip'- I am the only Quark user in our company- and was very frustrated - it was because i was sending it through our server!!! i will just have to remember to load my folders I work on back to the server for back-up!! I can't believe Quark can't solve this problem- it is totally unacceptable, I think less of them....ALL.
Thanks to you

Just an update. Our IT department has me testing an updated version of the Novell Netware Client (4.90 SP1a) and the file locking issue seems to have been resolved. Novell stated on thier website that the locked files issue affected other programs as well.

So bottom line, have yout IT departments look into updating your network software.

Good luck.
