Qbasic and Windows XP-PLEASE HELP ME!!! 1

Okay- just bought a notebook and when I go to install Qbasic, it tells me "invlaid startup directory- check my pif file". PLEASE HELP ME! i don't even know what the pif file is. I have Qbasic installed on my desktop, but REALLY want it on my notebook ASAP.SOmeone told e to find and download a 'patch', but the only ones I have found were to big to save to disk, then transfer over to notebook (as I have no internet on notebook as of yet- so cannot download straight from it.). ANY and ALL suggesstions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you copied your QBasic files over from your desktop. I think what the message is trying to tell you is you've told the program to start up in a directory, but that directory doesn't exist. I'm not using XP on this computer, but I think you've got two options to fix this:

1. Open QBasic up on your desktop, and see what directory it looks for and saves files in. Create exactly the same directory (including drive letter) on your notebook. After you get it to work on your notebook, you can change the default directory.

OR

2. Right click (in explorer) on the program file or shortcut you use to open the program, and select properties. From there, you can change startup and working directories.

I don't think you need a patch, but if you do, check out a program called FileVan. It allows you to connect two computers through serial, parallel, or USB ports to transfer files. You can download a trial version, which may be enough to get your patch onto the laptop. Of course, if you have a CD-R drive in your desktop, you can just burn it onto a CD.

I had the same problem on my Laptop with Qbasic and almost gave up. I figured XP was to good for Qbasic and wouldnt run it, but I was wrong.

You probably have the Qbasic files in your "Windows" folder...you need to move the qbasic files to "Documents and Settings"-"what ever user name you have listed"-then move them into "windows"

I too have my new computer with xp; my qbasic progs all work satisfactorilly (pif's OK); however, my new printer is connected to USB001, not LPT1 and I need a way of sending output to that port. Replacing LPT1 with USB001 is not recognised - any ideas please - is there an xp compliant qbasic type program? QCM.

my lexmark Zll printer comes with msdos emulation softwatre...you most likely can get somethin like that for any printer , but my printer is a real LPT port connection, not usb....there should be a way to emulate an LPT, check out google.com

Qbasic was made before the days of usb. Unless you add assemmbler to your program, you probably can not use the printer with qb.
