Q.
have three win2k servers with Ad installed on all. One domain.
AD intergrated DNS installed on two of them.
one of the DNS servers goes down. CAN'T log onto the domain
Why?
I though that all AD servers could authenticate if in the same site!

HI.

Configure each server to use its own DNS server and maybe another one from other server.
Configure clients to use 2 different DNS servers.

Are you sure it is a DNS issue?
Did you test by shutting DNS service only, or the whole server?

Do some reading from "Start-Help" and/or other sources about "FSMO" and "PDC Emulator".

Bye

thanks for your response Yizhar,
yeh I perhaps enphasised the DNS thing to much. I think DNS is ok, I mentioned that to eliminate DNS being the prob.
seems to be complaining about Gl Cat server in the ev log.
Do I need a GL Cat server for authentication.
Thanks again for such a quick response.
Gary.

It is possible that the server that went down was your Global Catalog server which is required for universal groups in native mode. By default the first DC in a site is a GC server.

I would enable Global Catalog server on a second DC.

After all, GC enables network logon by providing universal group membership information to a domain controller when a logon process is initiated.
