Putting the Documents and Settings folder to another partition?

Hi,

Is there any way to put the Documents and Settings from the System C Drive to my another extended partition and then deleting the one inside of the system partition?

At my work, they have it like this and when XP boots into the desktop, a DOS Command window pops up for like one second displaying d:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/MYUSERNAME NET SHARE or something like that...

Please help.

Create a new folder on the desired partition, right-click on My Documents, select Properties, click on the Move button, navigate to the newly created folder, click OK then Apply.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the fast replies but one that link, on Microsofts website, it explains on how to direct the whole profiles Documents and Settings using the UNATTENDED XP install.
I want to do this separately after a XP installation by first creating an exended partition and then moving the whole Documents and Settings to that partition and then deleting it from the default SYSTEM partition.

Can you please all explain how to do this please step by step?

Oh, and most people get confused with MY DOCUMENTS and DOCUMENTS AND SETTING folders...These are two different folders.

What you are proposing is not without risk, see this paragraph, "Moving the entire folder", in the following article, but do read the whole article. It will involve you editing the Registry if you proceed.

Ok, I read the whole article and now I seem to have understood it after reading it 100 times...

Also, since Im dual-booting Windows XP with Solaris, will this porcedure interfere with the Solaris booting process?

Ok, question. One which the step indicates using the Registry as below:
Am I correct, that this step says that I have to find every single regisry key that had Documents and Settings and change every one of them to the new partition path???
This would take hours and hours...And is very very tedious..
Please correct if Im wrong.

9. Start Registry Editor, and then click Find on the Edit menu.
10. Type documents and settings, and then click Find Next.
11. For every registry key or value that contains the original path, replace the value data or rename the value or registry key to the new path.IMPORTANT: You must complete this change in the registry for every instance of the original path, or your computer may not start. It is imperative that you update all registry keys and values with the new path.

Or...??? Are they just refering to the only this Registry entry as below here??

HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSFOT/WindowsNT/CURRENTVERSION/PROFILELISTS

Is that part or step refering to this only or does it mean EVERY SINGLE key that has the word DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS??

Change the "path" to your new location ........"For every registry key or value that contains the original path"........XP is good, but it is not a mind reader. It is the path that must be changed wherever it is mentioned in conjunction with Documents and Settings in the Registry.

Once you have a backup, look at things like this, but beware, mucking around with registry often results in format and clean installs, so also make sure you have saved your valuable data.
