Does anybody know of any way to put XP Pro to sleep by using a keystroke or corner? If it is a 3rd party app, that's totally fine. I have found a LOT of apps that will turn on a screen saver for you, but I need to be able to actually put the computer to sleep (or 'standby' as it were).

Thanks,

Jeremy

Create a blank *.txt file.
Copy this line without quotes into it - "%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState"
Save the file as hibernate.cmd file and copy it to your \Windows\System32 directory.
Right click on the desktop and select create new shortcut.
Type hibernate then next, next, etc.
Thats it.
Make sure you have hibernation enabled in your power settings.

You can create your own hotkey in the Properties of the shortcut if you like.

Thanks for that.

Can I do about the same thing for 'sleep'? Hibernation takes a bit long to enable and recover from...

I need this for a presentation and I have an auto-sensing vga switcher that defaults to the cpu signal. Once the cpu signal is absent, it will switch over to the secondary signal. So, the presenter wants to go back and forth rather quickly.

Thanks,
Jeremy

bcastner,

Thanks for your help!

My keyboard has a "Sleep" button on it. Just about every new keyboard has this button. From the XP "Power" setup you can decide what to have this button do. It can be set to Standby - Hibernate - or Shut Down. My computer (AMD XP2200) shuts down in about ten seconds and wakes up in about three seconds. In fact, I don't even usually shut down at all, Sleep button at night and space bar in the morning!
