Actually this is a valid question (as well as a valid need). In a noisey environment, for example a trading floor, it is almost mandatory to be able to mute your local mic (ie, with push-to-take or a push-to-mute handset. This really cuts the background noise down to zero when you are trying to hear the other party on the call.
