Hi All,

I have two core questions. I recently inherited the responsibility of moving my company from webmail to exchange. We recently merged with another company that had an exchange 03 box out of state. We want to decommission the Exchange03 box and bring it in house and take our pay for hosting web mail offline dump the mx records into the new Exchange 03 box and host all the mail in house.
I know this is much more involved than I am making it out to be. But I need some advice on where to start. Our out of state office has about 25 users and our CA. location has about 30 users. We want the MI. office to use a combo of either pop3 or outlook webmail and the same for our CA. location.

The current setup is as follows:

Exchange03 Server location: Michigan
Webmail Server location: California

Thanks in advance!

James

You'd be better off using RPC over HTTPS access for all users not on the network (as opposed to POP3). If all users are on the network (VPN, MPLS, etc), then native Outlook would be fine.

If all users are on the same domain, moving the server isn't as involved.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Thanks for the tip. Right now CA office is a work group environment and the MI office is a domain. I have a Wind2k3 DC w/ AD ready to deploy. Do you think I should deploy first before bringing the exchange server in house? I wanted to demote the MI Exchange server first build a new server and use the license from the old since the domain name has changed since the merger. Let me know what you think.

Deploy first.

Don't demote an Exchange server - everything will stop!!

That is a great idea sniper, however we are planning to move all servers to out rack in CA. also the MI office currently has a different domain name that will be changing to ours soon. We cannot have any down time as our accounting relies on emailing.
