I am currently running Exchange 2000. We recently added a new server to the mix, and since then my users are having difficulty accessing the public folders unless they are explicitly listed in the permissions. Unfortunately most people's permissions are determined by what group they are a member of, which means that "Public folders are gone" to the end user.

Can a mail enabled security group give access to public folders, or does it need to be distribution groups only?

Any help is appreciated!

Interesting thing... I was going through my Exchange 2k books and found this...

“When setting client permissions, you are working with security identifiers (SIDs) of Windows 2000 users and groups. Even though you are selecting MAPI address book entries, you are in fact working with mailbox- and mail-enabled Windows 2000 security principals. This is also the reason you cannot assign permissions to mail-enabled distribution groups. Unlike mail-enabled security groups, distribution groups do not represent security principals”

I'm going to setup a test security group to see if it fixes the problem I am currently having. I'm just curious why it worked before and now it won't...

you can definitely use mail enabled security groups to assign perms to public folders. It also makes your admin a lot easier as you don't need a security group and a distribution group at the same time.
