I am having problems with connecting a PS2 mouse in my laptop running Windows 98 First Edition. Connecting the mouse before start up just brings up a blank screen (not booting?) and the only way to switch the system off is to remove the batery. Connecting the mouse after startup brings up a hardware conflict message though I do not have any other mouse installed (except the trackpad).

Would be grateful for any help.

Sudesh.

haitersy,

Quick question: Is your PS2 Mouse an optical mouse or a standard roller-ball?

I had the same problem with my Gateway. I switched from a wheel mouse, to an "el-cheapo" two button mouse and it works OK.

That's exactly where I was going with this. The older OS (i.e. win98) and machines, don't necessarily like the 'hi-tech' mice. My dad had an old IBM laptop w/ win98 (that I configured for him)...he then tried to use an optical mouse w/ roller and the machine didn't recognize it.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. The mouse is actually a hand held trackerball made by Trust with an integrated laser pointer. When I connect the mouse after startup, the laser pointer alone actually works.
