How important is the -5 voltage rail on a dual Xnon based system?

A friend brought his system to me because he occasionally locks up. I installed SensorView; and all voltages look good except the (-5) volt is showing as -2.08 V.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Sounds way too low!!!

see the Hardware Monitor in the BIOS to double check that voltage...

-5v should be -5v (with a max tolerance of +-10%... but a namebrand PSU keeps it at a stable voltage (no fluctuation)...

Most newer PCs do not use the -5V and -12V outputs ar all. Many MOBOs do not monitor them either, so readings from a software based monitor may be bogus.

You should not be concerned unless you are building an industrial computer with cards that require these voltages.

Thanks, Frank4d for the technical advice I needed. This is an advanced system used for graphics & video design. There are 3 video cards, a scsi, etc, but it is not driving any industrial devices. So, I suppose that unless a graphics or sound card would monitor the negative rail the low -5 voltage should be irrelevant.
