setup--Proxy 2.0 on W2K server, clean install using wizard, SP2.

Exchange 5.5 on NT4.0 SP6a

Randomly, we stop receiving mail. Try to telnet to port 25 and get a connection denied error. Nothing in event logs, no services are stopped. Restarting proxy server coreects problem. Restarting exchange server does not help. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Greetings bbazzell,

We are kinda on the same page then. I am having some weired issues. Let me explain and we might be able to help each other out.

I am running Windows 2000 Server with Proxy 2.0 service packed and everything.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4.0 server SP6.

The problem I am having is port 110 is going up and down. Our port 25 hasn't dropped on us untill just a few days ago. We have been trying to battle this port 110 issue on why it is going down to no luck. I did however restart the proxy machine and then stoped and started the Internet Mail Service Service on Exchange. For days the port 110 never dropped on us then we shortly after had port 25 start dropping on us. It was just a matter of stopping and restarting the Information store service to get it back up. It still however it was dropping so we restarted the machine and port 25 hasn't dropped since. But due to that restart port 110 is now dropping again. I have just stopped and restarted the Internet Mail Service Service on Exchange and I am currently monitoring port 110 to see if it drops again.

Does anyone have any idea why on Windows 2000 with Proxy 2.0 useing Exchange 5.5 sp4 port 110 and 25 would be dropping? for us port 110 drops then picks back up by itself. I have a port monitor software running and I can see it dropping throughout the day and coming backup without any interaction from our IT staff.

So if you haven't found a fix.. Try stopping and restarting the Information store on your Exchange Box while proxy is up and running.

IF you have found any other reasons please let me know.

Thanks,
TecGuy.

well we fixed ours.. We installed ISA server and it's been working great since. Probably not the fix anyone wanted to hear, but it was getting to be a pain.

Hey,

Sorry for not posting back here.

All you had to do is call Microsoft. This is a bug with Proxy 2.0 and windows 2000. They will give you an FTP site with a hotfix. All you do is apply it and no more port 25 or 110 going down on you.

I applied the hotfix a couple weeks back a few days after my first reply to this message. Haven't had pop3 or smtp go down since.

Sorry I didn't post back here sooner..

Hello! Do you know what the hotfix number is? I called Microsoft and they told me that I had to have that. Thanks in advance!

There is a hotfix. Just call Microsoft and tell them that your Smtp and Pop3 is dropping. You May want to share with this this Article number. Q262373

Above is the link to the article posted. its an FTP site with a hotfix you can download. I applied the Hotfix Sat. Day and have not had any of those ports go down yet.

Give it a shot.

Thanks,
TecGuy

I contacted Microsoft and got the hotfix, but it will not install on a Windows 2000 computer, or on any service pack greater than SP1.

Have you heard of that before?

Greetings,

Hmm.. I installed it on our Windows 2000 Server. I don't know if it was up to date with service packs at the time. Let me clear this up. Your saying that it will not install on Windows 2000 if it has been service packed. Or are you saying it won't install at all on your Windows 2000 server?

No I haven't heard that before but I am still kind of confused at what it is your saying.

Again.. I installed that hotfix on our Windows 2000 Box running Proxy server 2.0.

It wouldn't install at all. I got an error message stating something about not being able to continue setup with anything greater than SP1.

Do you still have the downloaded hotfix?
