Proxy server

We are having big problems with our internet connection. We recently changed from a lease line to ADSL, but since then, I am having to reboot the modem 10 to 20 times a day.

I think it is now a problem with our network, as the modem is there with the light on, but is behaving like no one is trying to access the internet. And when you do, all you get is that horrid white page saying page cannot be accessed.

Is this something to do with our proxy server, I looked at the proxy management console, but could make no sense out of it.

Please help

It could be that your Proxy server is blocking access but that doesn't sound likely since you said you "changed" to ADSL from some other service and the Proxy server retains the same settings as when the connection worked. I think it's more likely that the protocol settings need to be configured to use the new service. You'll have to check the documentation that came with the service to see if the TCP/IP settings call for static IP addresses, subnet, gateway, DNS, DHCP, etc. or automatic (use a DHCP server). A good test of the connection would be to set up a single computer to the modem and see if the connection works without a Proxy server. If it does, you will have narrowed the problem down to either you router, switch, Proxy, or TCP/IP configuration. Which Proxy server are you using? I've also had similar problems that were corrected by simple means such as powering off the modem and router / switch, powering the modem on first, the router second and restarting the computer to lease a new IP address from the DHCP server in the router, when the router has a DHCP server, that is. Good luck!

This is what I have to do, I have to switch off the router and back on again, but 10 times a day.

The modem is configured correctly (as far as I am aware) as we are getting internet, and it is quick when on, it just stalls sometimes, but the modem shows that it is waiting for someone to go on to the net.

We have tried 2 modems now, 2 new dsl filters, and I have lastly updated the firmware for the modem, and the problem has got better, but it still stalls. This was why I was now looking at the Proxy. We are running Microsoft Proxy Server 2 on a windows NT4 Server. The Server is running DHCP, and the Modem is not, but has a static IP from the ISP.

I have changed all the DNS addresses to the ones we were given by our ISP.

Is there some sort of limiting thing on the proxy that can be set higher or something.

Just so you know, we switched from a Leased line to ADSL and have had these problems ever since.

I have set up a computer to the modem, but as it is a switch, it seems to still be connected to the network. It is running XP, and I notice that I can disable the network, I have my pc on a fixed IP anyway, to bypass the blocked sites. If I disable the network, will it still happily run through the modem as just a single PC?
