Proxy server, port 8000

When I start my pc, I'm stopped from getting on the internet because there is a proxy server using port 8000 in Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Advanced where my cable modem company is listed as a proxy server. If I delete all the boxes, I can then get to the internet. It was my cable company that pointed out the fix, so I don't think they are the problem. They said it might be adware that has been installed. Spy-Bot hasn't found anything. Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you install anything from your cable company when you initally setup your connection? They may have originally had that in place and gotten rid of it. Either way, if it comes back after you delete it, you could search your registry for the ip:port combo, backup whatever key is holding it, and then delete it. If that doesn't work, I'd say you definitely have a malware program on there and should try multiple spyware scanners to remove it. You could always switch to Firefox to ease your pain. =)

Thanks, did that. Ran spybot, then ran norton. Didn't really find anything that looked out of place, but it seems better. I'll let you know if it comes back. Enjoy the New Year.
