I am running sendmail 8.9.3 (I know it's old, we will be upgrading soon, but I need to resolve this before hand.). Some of my customers when sending e-mail to us will get this bounce.

Code:
 Tue 2005-02-15 16:13:12: Socket connection established (207.250.175.6 :
2332 -> 24.106.41.38 : 25)  Tue 2005-02-15 16:13:12: Waiting for protocol initiation...
 Tue 2005-02-15 16:13:42: 30 second wait for protocol timeout exceeded.
 Tue 2005-02-15 16:13:42: This message is 60 minutes old; it has 0 minutes left in this queue Tue 2005-02-15 16:13:42: Primary queue lifetime exceeded; message placed in retry queue

I have searched the little bit that there is out there on the net about this problem and have come to the conclusion that I need to increase the protocol timeout on my sendmail server. The question I have is, how do I do that? Which timeout value do I change and where do I change it? What value do I set in sendmail.cf (Please don't mention using sendmail.mc because the original installer did not use it, and I don't know what changes he made in sendmail.cf to translate over to the .mc)

thanks in advance.

This could be a dns/Rdns issue but maybe it's an ident query problem. Try this, edit your sendmail.cf and look for the following line:
#O Timeout.ident=0
Remove the hash, save the file and restart sendmail. Also
make sure your DNS resolver/forwarders are working properly.
