I'm upgrading an old 10base T hub to a 100 base 10 switch. I've narrowed selection to Linksys GB switch (model EF2s24 won out over Netgear and 3com products at similar price), and a Cisco 2950 switch. WHAT'S THE MATERIAL DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO?

typo in subject line: it should read "Cisco Catalyst 2950 switch"

How many forums have you seen dedicated to Linksys switches? What do you think you level of support will be? Availablility of configuration help? Software updates? Linksys makes a decent product but if I were going to bank on a switch I'd make it Cisco. ----------------------------------------

thanks jgercken, i was "feeling" the same way, but hadn't found substantive data to validate my reasons (for being partial to Cisco over Linksys, 3Com, and Netgear).

A cisco switch vs a linksys is like comparing a ferrari to a pinto. It just doesn't compair. So many more features with the Cisco.

The linksys model you pointed out isn't managed, so you can't do a port analysis, assigned vlans, mirror ports, etc. Plus your buying a small/home business product.

The cisco 2950 is a very fast managed switch which is made for the telco closet of most businesses.

If your business just needs a faster hub, then go w/ the Linksys. However if dependability, warranty, features are necessary, then buy the Cisco.
