I have a client with about 15+ computers network as a peer-to-peer network. We're migrating to a server environment to keep everyone information a lot more organized, secure, and backed up.
I ordered a powerful server with Server 2008 on it and want to make sure I take the proper steps in getting everyone on the domain:
(please correct me on any mistakes below)
1. power on server, configure passwords
2. turn off dhcp, assign it static from ip range in router.
3. make it a domain controller, assign it a domain name like "domain"
4. create user accounts and configure accounts to allow 'my documents' folder to redirect to users folder on the server.
5. (this is where things get fuzzy - so please help)go to clients PC and run Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and migrate their current environment and files to their existing domain account name. this way everyone won't have a big environment change with this new server.
6. join clients pc to domain, reboot. client is now linked to domain with 'my documents' now being backed up onto the server.
7. everyone is happy.
is this the way you would do it?
