I am tasked with updating our BCM400 (a task that is long over due). My main question is which update to install first?
Our current versions:
BCM.R400.046-SoftwareManagement
BCM.R400.SU.Desktop-002-200708
BCM.R400.SU.System-002-200708
BCM.R400.SU.System-003-200709

The updates I have to install are:
BCM.R400.160-SoftwareManagement
BCM.R400.SU.System.023-200909
BCM.R400.SU.Desktop.014-200903

I figured out I have to install the System update before the Desktop update but the readme for the SoftwareManagement and System seem to indicate I need a newer version of the other before installing.
BCM.R400.160-SoftwareManagement Dependencies:
Required patches BCM.R400.SU.System.005 or later version
BCM.R400.SU.System.023-200909 Dependencies:
Required Updates BCM.R400.160-SoftwareManagement or later must be applied before this update

Any advice? And any other tips for a first time updater? :)

Thanks

What Rls of software is your BCM on ? ? ? If on Rls 4 SU is up to 26 now. You would not be installing the latest if thats the case.

Thanks - I will try to get the latest version and install that instead.

Will installing these updates set everything back to default? Will I need to reprogram the BCM from scratch after applying?

No you should not need to reprogram anything. Just make sure you let the system finish installing the patches. In older releases I have seen techs stop a patch install before they were finished thus corrupting the BCM. In release 4 not as much of a problem much faster. I have seen patches installing on older releases take over 4 hours very ugly. No reason why when others that have same release sames patches run in 1 hour. Go figure.

Thanks again, any thoughts on the install order? (which update to install first)

Currnetly on Nortel website there are only 4 patches available for Rls 4.0 two of them are specific to either advanced paging the other for specialized transfer. You probably do not need them. The two remaining are System, & Desktop. From Readme:

Updates should be applied in the order below:
- BCM.R400.SU.System.026-201002
- BCM.R400.SU.Desktop.016-201002

Can anyone download them from the Nortel site? I checked in the support section but can't find them.

You need to be registered with Nortel as a distributor in order to be able to download software / patches etc.

Another very important point to note is that you must be using the latest version of Element Manager before installing the patches. My colleague corrupted a BCM 400 release 4 system 2 Months ago by having an out of date version, even though it was fine for doing standard admin changes etc.

firebird, thats interesting. Ive never heard of that happening what did it do to the system, and how did you fix it?

My friend had the release BusinessElementMgrInstaller v50.10.0 July 2008.exe on his Laptop whereas I tend to always have the latest issue installed.

Anyway he loaded up the latest (issue 24 at the time) system patch, using the Management patch first. This was the small file. He let the BCM reboot as it should do. After a while, he installed the second part, which had about 70 to 80 patches. They were all installed, the it failed when at the applying stage.

After that we couldn't remove or apply any other patch. I use Acronis and had a day one image available to re apply, otherwise we would had to order a replacement disk.

This time, I installed the system patches on the BCM from my own Laptop, but we decided as a precaution to install the "2nd" (large) patch first. This shouldn't be possible, but the screen showed that both parts of the system patch were available, whereas I thought that only the Management patch would have been available.

The BCM let us start off with the 2nd part of the patch and we could install and apply it without any problems. Then we were able to apply the desktop patch afterwards.

I can't think why we had encountered problems, but he was a real pain at the time.
