We have some phones in remote locations (9650s) with crappy limited DSL (i.e, upstream bandwidth peaks around 400k/second on a good day). Right now one location has a Sonicwall TZ 190, the other is getting a newer 205.

In order to configure better bandwidth management I'm trying to determine what ports are used for the actual voice calls. Ideally I want to setup a rule that says whenever the 9650 is talking the pbx for a voice call, make sure there is always 200K of absolutely guaranteed untouchable bandwidth. To do that properly I need the ports for the voice call as there is always some low level communication going on for the status of the lights, vm indicators, etc.

Just use the IP of the PBX to apply your QOS. If the destination is the PBX then reserve the bandwidth.

The problem with that approach is that so long as there is any chatter between the phones and the pbx the bandwidth isn't available to any other services/devices.

No garantiee because you pass over internet so you can not control your bandwith.... Everything who passing by Public internet have no garantee.. but that working generally correct...

You CAN guarantess the outbound queues on your firewalls however. Just not the inbound of either side. It's (slightly) better than nothing...

Don't do it as you have doubts already.
