I have been given the task of fixing a imac. when booting a prompt comes up. The owner figured out that typing "boot" was the only way to get to the desktop. Is this a problem? I have tried to reinstall with little success. If I could get online (the original problem) I could update to 8.6...and/or get norton fixit software. Any suggestions? Yes, I am a mac noob. Thanks in advance.

it sounds like you are booting up into openfirmware. it probably looks like a grey screen with a ">" prompt on your machine. try typing without the quotes

"reset-nvram"
and/or
"resetnvram"
and /or
"resetall"
and/or
"reset-all"

hit enter after typing it to see what happens. if that doesn't work, you can type open firmware in apples search box and you should find a tech document on how to get out of open firmware.
