We have had some problems with our PDC and we had to have the server taken off site for exchange to be repaired.

In the meantime I have a BDC running but no one can logon in to the domain or look at the BDC. Is it simply a case of electing the BDC to PDC and I can get people logging in?

How do I promote a BDC to PDC???

Is this w2k? If so was the origianl server that that was taken away the global catalgue server? Did the server perform any fsmo roles?

There are no PDC's or BDC's with Windows 2000, either a server is running Active Directory (and therefore a DC) or it's not (and therefore simply a member server).

That aside, as elliotm points out, the server that was taken off site most likely held all the FSMO roles as well as the GC.

Are you running AD on the remaining server?

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Ok the remaining machine (server2) is running W2K and has AD installed.

The server that has been removed (server1) also ran AD, and server2 picked all amendments to AD up from server1.

So you guys think there is little possibility in getting server2 running as a DC in the meantime until server1 is returned?

Is there any way GC and FSMO roles can be transfered to another DC? - for future ref..

As long as the server that is left on site has a full copy of the active directory you can make this machine the Global Catalogue Server. That is the whole point of running Replica Domain Controllers in a 2000 domain.

tpluskota,

yes you can transfer and if necessary, seize the FSMO roles to other servers. to transfer, the original server hosting the FSMO roles will need to be on the wire. to seize, the server will probally be dead, thus the seizing - action. but if you seize-em', you can't bring the original FSMO server back online until you rebuild it new.
