Hello, GOOD DAY! ! !

I have additional DC and I want to promote to DC so that I can reformat the current DC. My problem is I have a SQL 2k3 installed in my DC. After the promotion the computer NAME and IP Address will be change right? so what will happen with my Exchange Server 2k3 after that?

I know that there is alot of work envolved with this plan I just need to have guidance from experience people... [sadeyes]

Any help is very much appreciated.. thank you in advance..

You mean to say 58Sniper that if every that there will be a changes with the DC like the Computer Name or IP or NetBIOS name, exchange server 2k3 cannot continue to function and the users emails will be gone?

is exchange dependent with the configured DC? [ponder]

No - my point is that if Exchange is installed on a box you want to demote from being a DC, or promote, you can't do it. Doing so will permanently break Exchange. Plus, it's not recommended to put Exchange on a DC anyways.

Hello... 58sniper

Actually my exchange is not installed in my current DC. My exchange 2k3 is installed in separate computer running MS2k3 witch is not even an AD. I have Domains right now companyOLD.com and companyNEW.local sense that microsoft did't recommend of having the same external and internel name right?. I am planning to build an new domain which the companyNEW.local.

Here is my problem. is it posible that I can move the accounts from companyOLD.com to my companyNEW.local including emails in my exchange and etc?

I just really want to build a new network then use a deferent internal name for my domain just to follow the recommendation of Microsoft to avoid future conflict.

Any idea/sugestion/correction is very much appreciated. [ponder]

THANK YOU in advance.

I would suggest you read this:

Your exchange server - if it's running Exchange 2000 or 2003 - MUST be on a domain - Exchange doesn't work without active directory. It may not be on a Domain Controller, but it MUST be on a domain.

If you want to build a new domain and transfer the mailboxes, I would suggest you use ExMerge to dump the exchange mailboxes from the original installation and then import them into the new install.

If I am reading the original post correctly, you want to promote a current server to a DC and that server has SQL on it?

You should not make a SQL server a DC. There are commands that can be executed within SQL that could allow a person to become an Admin on the server. It is a huge security risk.

I hope you find this post helpful.
