I just want to find out which machine is taking the loads of badnwidth. I have Network Monitor installed, byut no SMS, how would I do this on a random machine in the LAN?

I can't seem to get it, driving me crazy...

what routers are you using. The HP, Intel and Cisco (all im familliar with on this topic) have software that manages and reports all of this...or are you just on a simple switched network?

Cisco 1721...but it is a simple switched network inside here with about 40 nodes.

so you dont want to test the whole network, just your secluded section?
Take a look at Network Security Toolkit
Its a BootableOS with lots of fun things for network monitoring, securing, filtering etc.....that should help you.

Well my main goal at the moment is to find out which user out of the 40 is eating the bandiwdth at any given time from my Desktop machine.

This bootable ISO looks nice...will give it a go, although it does look complex...will check out and see though.

its not complex really - its, like any a tool kit....lots of little programs. There is a network leecher on there i think that just sits and collects summary data.
